Shipping container stock in the yard at golden hour

From Fremantle to the far side of the metro

Every Perth container starts at the port end of the city. Our Western Australian stock is held at a Fremantle depot, and from there it goes out by road: Leach Highway and Roe Highway east towards Kewdale, Welshpool and Forrestfield, Tonkin Highway north to Malaga and the Swan Valley, and Great Eastern Highway up past Midland into the Hills. A customer in Kalamunda or Mundaring is a longer haul than one in Bibra Lake, so the price reflects the distance and the kind of truck the site calls for. You get one figure that covers the container and getting it to you, worked out from your address.

Outback Containers is a Queensland business and we say so plainly: there is no Perth office, shopfront or crew. What there is — stock sitting in Fremantle, a sales team on 1300 235 972 who handle Western Australian enquiries the same way as any other, and road carriers who do the drop. If you want to look over a container before ordering, inspection at the depot can be arranged. Either way, photos of the actual unit are available on request before delivery.

Hills blocks, Swan Valley vineyards and the south-east fringe

The Perth jobs that take some thought are rarely in the suburbs. Up in the Hills — Kalamunda, Gooseberry Hill, Mundaring, Gidgegannup, Chidlow — driveways climb through jarrah and marri on laterite gravel that goes loose on a steep pitch, and a tilt-tray has to reverse up that grade carrying the load. The Swan Valley has vineyard rows, packing sheds and river-flat paddocks around Herne Hill, Baskerville and Upper Swan. Head south-east and the fringe opens into horse properties and hobby farms around Oakford, Byford and Serpentine in the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale. To the north, Bullsbrook and Ellenbrook sit on the edge of the City of Swan with rural lots behind them.

On those properties the question is whether the truck can get in, turn, tilt and get back out. Tell us the gradient, any creek crossing or culvert, low branches and power lines across the drive, and how firm the ground is. A 20ft container on a tilt-tray suits most acreage drops. A 40ft usually needs a side-loader and a long, level approach, and on a steep Hills block a crane truck is sometimes the only sensible way. The clearances are listed on the delivery page.

Industrial suburbs, builders and households

Closer in, containers go to warehouses, workshops and yards in Kewdale, Welshpool, Canning Vale, Malaga and Hazelmere — overflow for stock, a secure spot for tools outside the main building, or a way to split a shared yard into lockable bays. Builders on the newer estates east and north of the city tend to prefer a site store on hire that goes back once the house is handed over. Households take them for renovations, a move between houses, or the trailer, camping and garden gear that has outgrown the shed.

Used cargo-worthy containers do most of this work well. A new single-trip unit is worth the extra where the box will be lined and fitted out, painted to match a building, or seen by customers every day. If you are weighing the two, the new versus used guide sets out the differences.

Perth weather and where to put it

Perth summers are long, hot and dry, and a steel box in full sun gets properly hot inside. A pale colour, some shade and vents at each end make a real difference to anything heat-sensitive. Winter fronts bring most of the year's rain in a few months, and that is when drainage and condensation matter: set the container on sleepers or pads under the corner castings, a touch higher at the door end so water runs away from the seals, and keep it off the lowest part of the block.

Much of the Hills and the outer fringe is mapped as bushfire prone. A container is not a fire shelter and we will never suggest it protects what is inside from a bushfire. If you are storing fuel, chemicals or anything valuable in a bushfire-prone area, ask your local government about siting and clearances and follow its guidance. The same applies to permits generally — our council approval guide covers what to ask before a truck is booked.

Choosing the size before the truck is booked

A 10ft suits a narrow side path in an older suburb such as Bayswater or Victoria Park, or a townhouse courtyard where nothing bigger will swing in. The 20ft is the default for households and trades — room for the contents of a family home, and it rides on a standard tilt-tray. A 40ft or high cube makes sense on a Swan Valley winery, a Hills property with machinery to lock away, or an industrial yard with room to manoeuvre. If you are unsure, measure the largest item going in and check it against the door opening on the dimensions page.

Perth container questions

Where does a Perth container come from?

From stock held at a Fremantle depot. It goes out by road to your address, and the delivery is priced into the quote along with the container, so the distance from Fremantle to your place is already accounted for.

Can you deliver to a steep block in Kalamunda or Mundaring?

Often, yes, but it depends on the grade, the turning room at the top and what is overhead. Send photos of the driveway and the spot. If a tilt-tray cannot manage it safely, we will say so and quote a crane truck instead.

Can I look at a container in Perth before I order?

Inspection at the Fremantle depot can be arranged — ask when you call. If you would rather not make the trip, we send photos of the actual container on request before it is delivered.

Is there an Outback Containers office in Perth?

No. We are a Queensland business supplying Western Australia from Fremantle stock. Sales calls go to 1300 235 972, Mon–Fri 7:30am–5pm and Sat 8am–12pm Queensland time, and everything is quoted and confirmed by phone and email.

Do you deliver to Ellenbrook and Bullsbrook?

Yes. Both are on the northern edge of the City of Swan and are quoted from Fremantle stock like the rest of the metro. Rural lots around Bullsbrook often have long gravel drives, so tell us about the approach.

How long does container delivery to Perth take?

Timing depends on stock and the truck schedule; we confirm it when you book.

How much does delivery to Perth cost?

Delivery is quoted upfront based on your exact address and container size — one clear number covering container + freight, GST inclusive. Call 1300 235 972 for a delivered price today.

Can I view a container before buying?

Ask us and we'll send photos of your actual container — serial number visible — before it's delivered. Local inspection options depend on depot stock; ask when you enquire.
