"New" in the container world means single-trip: built overseas, loaded once for the voyage to Australia, then sold. Near-flawless paint, tight door seals, fresh timber floors and decades of life ahead.
Grades, plainly: As-is units are sold as seen and are not sold watertight — watertight applies to cargo-worthy and new grades only. Your quote always names the grade, and photos of the actual unit are available on request before delivery.
Not sure whether new is worth the extra? Our guide to new vs used containers gives you the honest breakdown — or compare used (cargo-worthy) containers.

New containers are built overseas and carry one load of cargo on the voyage to Australia. When that trip ends, they are sold into the local market rather than going back into shipping service. That one voyage is why a new container may arrive with a scuff, a small mark from the lashings or a little dust on the floor — it has done a real trip — but the panels are straight, the paint is the factory coating, the door seals are fresh and the timber floor is clean.
You are fitting it out. Offices, studios, site sheds with power and lining, farm-gate stalls, pop-up shops. Every hour of fit-out work goes better on straight walls and a sound floor, and a high cube gives you the headroom to line it.
People will see it. Beside a house, in front of a business, at a school or club. A new container looks tidy for years with no touch-ups.
You want the longest life. With basic care — sitting level, off the ground, with chips touched up — a new container lasts decades. If you are buying once and keeping it, the extra cost is spread over a long time.
It is going near the coast. A full factory paint system with no existing rust needs the least maintenance in salt air.
For plain storage in a paddock, a yard or behind a shed, a used cargo-worthy container does the same job for a good deal less. It is inspected and sold wind and watertight, and nobody storing fencing gear or furniture needs straight panels. We will tell you when used is the better buy; our new vs used guide sets out the whole comparison.
Set it level on sleepers or concrete blocks at the four corners so the doors stay true. Grease the door hinges and locking bars now and then. Touch up any chip in the paint before it rusts. Fit vents if it will hold anything that minds humidity — a sealed steel box can sweat inside in humid weather, new or not. Ask us for photos of the actual unit before delivery if colour or condition matters to you.

Colours depend on what stock is available at the time, so ask when you enquire. If a particular colour matters, tell us and we will check what can be sourced before you order.
Not always. Single-trip containers have made one voyage, so small scuffs or marks from loading are normal. Ask for photos of the actual unit before delivery if appearance matters.
Use a good-quality padlock through the door handles. A lock box — a steel shroud welded around the padlock — makes it far harder to cut, so ask whether the unit you are quoted has one fitted.
